The Toucan Squawk, Feb. 18 - 22

Hello families...I hope everyone has had a great week!  The kiddos are almost finished with their unit on measurement.  We worked on capacity and unit conversions, quizzing on unit conversions today.  The class will take a test on the entire unit tomorrow.

The class has also been working extra hard on finishing the "bubble gum writing" they started last week.  Most of the projects are finished, and those that aren't finished will complete them tomorrow.  They have also been working super hard on finishing up their research on their biography writing.  Many students have been struggling putting the paragraph together, so we've been working hard at finding the information in their research and writing everything out in their own words.  This can be really hard, particularly since this is a social studies topic based on fact.  Mostly everyone has turned in their sloppy copies and are ready to start writing out their finals.  Mrs. Sullins came in our class and presented her presentation as author Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This was a great chance for everyone to see exactly what we're looking for when everyone presents their final presentation.  She also reminded the class about their costume- which does not need to be something you need to spend money on.  We discussed today that their costume can be something put together using clothing and other items from home- old clothing, for example.  The students will also be responsible for bringing in a prop to go with their presentation- to exemplify who their person was.

The Toucan Squawk, Feb. 11 - 15

Hello families!  Thursday is our Valentine's Day celebration.  The kiddos will rotate through the other 2nd grade classes to complete different activities with those teachers.  This will take them pretty much the whole morning, before and after their recess.  After lunch and recess, we'll have our card exchange in our classroom.  Students can bring their cards tomorrow, and I can hold onto them for Thursday.  Either way, if they are bringing in cards they will need to bring them for all of the kids in our class- not just their friends.  Below is our class list:

We've finished working on fractions and graphs, and moved into measurement.  The students first worked with estimating lengths, and now are working on inches and centimeters.  Tomorrow, they will measure various things around the room and record their measurements.  It should be a really fun activity to reinforce measurement of inches and centimeters.  They are also working on using their five senses to describe something, namely a piece of gum.  First, they worked on describing Skittles and then they had a piece of gum and had to use adjectives to describe.  Next the kids will finalize their writing and make a really fun project to display their writing.

We have moved away from the digestive system and the respiratory system, and are currently working on our social studies unit for the quarter.  You may have already read the notice sent home yesterday, but just to give you some background the students will be researching a historical person who had a hand in the Westward Expansion or the Revolutionary War.  Students chose from such important figures as George and Martha Washington, Betsy Ross, and Paul Revere.  The notice stated students are responsibile for creating a costume to reflect their character.  Students are also responsible for memorizing their writing piece, which will be about a paragraph.  Their paragraphs will begin going home soon, so they will have plenty of time to practice it.  As much as Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Holston, Mrs. Sullins, and I are reinforcing the students will need to memorize their piece, they will be welcome to have the writing with them as a safety net.  We will announce the date for our live wax museum.  We've decided to invite parents and family members to our classrooms in shifts, as this presentation can tend to make rooms noisy and fairly croweded.  More news will come soon!
