Parent Night

We'll have our Parent Night tomorrow 5 - 6 PM, Room 3.  For your information, I'll be leaving about 20 minutes early in the afternoon for a doctor's appointment.  Mrs. Romo will take over my class for that time.  I'll be back with plenty of time to prep for our discussion.  Mrs. Romo may have the library computer lab open for an introduction to Parent Vue as well.  If I don't tell you tomorrow, thank you for being there!

Thank you for all you do!

The Toucan Squawk, Aug. 23

Hello families!  I hope everyone has enjoyed their week.  We've been working on even and odd numbers this week, as well as reteach groups on expanded notation.  The students started reading their reading series story, "Henry and Mudge" on Monday, as well as studying their spelling words for the week.  In the upcoming weeks, we'll start center rotations.  So far, I've had the students practice working in various groups and partnerships.  Once rotations are held, the students will be grouped together to work on previously introduced concepts in math, Word Work using the current week's spelling words, reading, and Math Facts in a Flash tests on the computers.  As the students work through the rotations, I'll be working with groups on reading or writing.  I'll be able to read with the students at least every other day, depending on their reading level.

Tuesday night is our Parent Night for second grade!  I'm so excited to have this chance to discuss various procedures in our classroom.  It will definietly clear the air on any concerns and questions you may have.  Each classroom will have their own Parent Night 5:00 - 6:00 PM.  I'll have a packet for everyone with an agenda of what I would like to discuss.  Afterwards, we'll have time for questions.  Our principal, Mrs. Romo, will have the computer club in the library open to discuss Parent Vue on the district's grade system Synergy.  Parent Vue will be open in September, and this will be a great opportunity to learn more about this system.  Through the school year, other teachers will hold their own Parent Nights, and these can be more opportunities to learn about the system as well.

The Toucan Squawk, Aug. 16, 2012

Wow, what fantastic first two weeks we've had!

We've done plenty of work to get everyone ready for the rest of the school year, and already have had plenty of opportunities to show growth of knowledge.  The other second grade teachers and I started with our curriculum the first week, and we haven't stopped!  With the heavy requirements we are being handed by the state and the school district, we have all organized our teaching in a methodical, sometimes fast-paced, structure.  We also, of course, have had plenty of opportunities for students to be reintroduced to the concepts.  We'll continue this structure through the school year, and I'll plan accordingly based on shortened and 1/2 day weeks.

We have so far covered place value to the 4th digit.  Students were super excited when I mentioned we'd be working with numbers up to the thousands place!  We've also been working through this week's story, "Ann's First Day".  Today, the students read as the story played on my computer.  The students also worked with the week's spelling words in their Word Work notebooks.  Working with the words with centers and sorting word cards is helping them become more and more familiar with the words through the week.  On Fridays, the students sort them in the week's concepts (this week, for example, they were short and long vowel words) and then glue them inside their notebooks.  Friday mornings, the students will be taking their spelling test.  This will be sent home on Mondays in their Homework folders.

Please help your student remember to bring in their Homework folders and their backpacks everyday.  Pretty much every day students will be taking home mail and notes, both from myself and from the school.

We have started using Table Points, in addition to the students' personal nickel banks.  Each table will have opportunities to earn extra nickels based on, for example:
  • transitioning quickly, quietly, and safely between the carpet to their desks (and vise verse, of course),
  • completing center work quietly without my intervention,
  • consistently following directions without my intervention (or the intervention of table mates),
  • being exemplary models of using the correct voice level.
There will be more opportunities to earn Table Points, but these are just an example of some reasons.

I look forward to working with everyone this school year- it's sure to be great!

Welcome to second grade!

Welcome to another great school year!  I'm definitely looking forward to meeting and working with everyone on the path to success for your child in second grade.  It's sure to be a fantastic school year.

Through the year, I'll be posting to the class blog with news updates.  Occasionally, I may send home notes with the students in their Homework Folders when an urgent note comes up.  For the most part, this blog will be great way for me share necessary information:  school activities, class activities, lesson units we're working through, class needs, etc.

My hopes is this can be a huge help for you if you have any questions about what we're doing.  I also have links to helpful sites, as well as documents of classroom procedures.

I am also available by email through the evening if a situation arises when you may need my immediate attention.  I can, at times, email you back fairly quickly.  During the school day, I don't check it as often as I do afterwards, however I try to check it periodically through the day.  If you need to call, please do so through the school office main phone number.  They can get a note to me immediately, or it can be put in my mailbox for me to contact you back at my earliest convenience.  Myself and the other teachers have full work days, so please excuse my tardiness in getting back to you if a situation arises here at school which needs my attention.  However, I do try my best to contact you by the end of the day.

Information will be available for you at Open House night to go over during the weekend.  I will also have some forms for you to fill out.  However, these can be taken home and filled out to be returned as soon as possible.

Open House night is Friday, August 3rd, 5:00 - 6:30.  I look forward to meeting you and starting the year off to a great start.  If not then, the first day of school is Monday the 6th.  School starts at 8:00, and ends at 2:15.

Have a great week!

Toucan Squawk, May 14 - 18

Hello families!  It's finally the last full week of school- unbelievable!  We've had a fairly busy week- finishing tests and projects, all the while keeping our heads on straight as we're counting down the days.  The kiddos have been SO busy, and SO well-behaved this week.  After being in rows for several weeks, I just couldn't help it but I put the class back into groups today.

WOW- what an amazing day it was!  Can I say it again?  WOW!  They were so polite, respectful, and patient with each other.  They were also quietly working when the task called for it, and was able to quiet their voices when they got too loud.  I was very impressed.  :-D

If the class keeps this up, they will be earning their Free Time on Friday, as well as a visit to the prize box.  I'm so very proud of their maturity these past couple of months- mostly because they all have realized a few things about responsibility and respect.  Because of this growth in behavior, the class as a whole earned an extra 5 minutes for Friday.  I know they are hoping they can keep it- everyone was just so excited to hear they had earned both!

The kiddos will finish taking their final STAR Math and Reading tests this week.  My plan is to send the reports home with them next week.  However, at this moment, we as teachers have not been informed by the school district if we are sending home the report cards next Thursday or if they will be mailed home after school gets out.  Either way, report card going home with the students or not, they will be taking home their STAR reports next Thursday.

The Toucan Squawk, April 30 - May 4

We have a busy, busy next few weeks!  We have projects to complete, Science Week activities to participate in, and lastly lots of cleaning to do.  Next week is Science Week.  The students will be going to various classes in the 4th - 6th buildings to participate in various activities.  It should definitely be a lot of fun for everyone.  We also have some activities to complete in the classroom, as well as some units to finish up.  During the last week, we'll also be having an Unbirthday celebration for the "summer babies" of our class.  We'll also be acknowledging everyone else's birthdays as well.  I've sent notes home with specific students requesting donations for snacks to share with everyone.  I also sent home the summer school brochure.  Just to clarify, the summer school is for all students- both who need remediation, and for those who need enrichment.  The brochure is also online at http://sierravistapublicschools.com/.  There is a link on the main page to the brochure to print.  Please return the brochure with your payment with your student as soon as possible, as spots fill quickly.
