The Toucan Squawk, Feb. 28th - Mar. 5th

Hello families!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  The students are completing St. Patrick's day-related art crafts for our bulletin board.  So far, a St. Patrick's Day pot stewing up some good luck puzzle shamrocks.  They are currently working on coloring leprechans, which will be cut out and posted on the bulletin board as well.  It's turning out really cute, and I'll definietly have to post a picture of it when it's completed.

The students completed their unit on contractions, so it will continue to pop up in their homework every now and then.  We will be moving on to a review of previously introduced concepts for the rest of the week, and then move on to a new unit.  In math, the students have completed their unit on graphing and have moved on to unknown numbers in a pattern.  It's a concept students have been introduced to in 1st grade, as well as earlier in the year.  For students who have grasped the concept, they will be completing challenge work.  The students read a story about fossils last week, and are reading another story about fossils.  This week's story is different, as it is a Time for Kids Special Report.  Both stories proved to be fun for the students to read, and they have been great segways for a future science unit.  Below are the spelling words, they are words from social studies.
  1. bone
  2. drill
  3. ocean
  4. stone
  5. deep
  6. hill
  7. oil
  8. digging
  9. land
  10. remains

The Toucan Squawk, Feb. 14th - Feb. 18th

Hello families!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, and a happy Valentine's Day.  Our Gliteracy event on Friday went great!  A HUGE thanks to the parents who volunteered for the morning- it was much appreciated!  The students made a valentine's cookie, a picture frame, a bookmark, and a valentine's card as they rotated through each 2nd grade class.  The students definitely enjoyed the time creating their crafts- and snack, of course.  I cannot say it enough, thank you for all you do!

The students went home with their St. Patrick's Day candy gram sheet.  Purchases and the sheet are due March 10th.  The students are continuing their unit on contractions through the rest of the week, as with their unit on graphs and tally charts.  We will finish with the math unit on Friday, and move into missing numbers in number patterns next Tuesday.

The spelling words for the week are as follows.  They are words with Blends:
  1. slide
  2. smooth
  3. start
  4. swim
  5. slip
  6. speak
  7. story
  8. smart
  9. spot
  10. sweet
The students have started weekly spelling centers.  We have started them slowly, but they are learning quickly how to govern themselves while continuing to work independently.  As of right now, they will have three centers to complete by the Friday of the week.  Eventually, the students will also be completing math centers.  The students are completing the centers through the day, not just during our set spelling practice time in the afternoon.  I have it set up this way so this set time in the afternoon can be freed up for other activities and lessons, as well as completing the centers.  I'm pretty impressed with the students' behavior and their quick learning as they complete each center-  it's definitely helping the process of completing each one go smoother and quicker.  I'm so happy to see them continue to succeed, and I'm positive the learning they complete in each center will transfer to their learning during lessons.
